National Portfolio Days are annual events typically held in multiple locations across the United States, Canada and Europe. Students from all around the world are welcome to participate in portfolio reviews to prepare for college and university at the undergraduate or graduate level.
This year's theme was "Above and Beyond" - sky’s the limit, limitless potential and taking opportunities above and beyond. The goal was to focus on the student experience, evoke excitement for where art and design can take you (i.e. out of this world), spark curiosity, dreams, and aspirations and be relatable for attendees. This project was a collaboration between myself and another designer, Carmen Cheung (Wiseblood).
We started by looking at interesting and unorthodox character illustrations, something simple yet unique. The overall design had to be bright, bold and eye-catching. I played around with a couple different forms but we landed on a character style that was free-flowing with exaggerated elements, similar to the ones on this moodboard. The colour palette and typography are both playful and approachable so they compliment each other very well.
The characters are meant to represent the students attending these events, venturing above and beyond into the world of design. I've included other space-inspired graphic elements such as a ruler satellite, pencil rocket and backpack jetpack to fully play into the theme. The exaggerated forms and geometric shapes are interesting and eye-catching and are cohesive with the overall design.
The final deliverables, were website design, postcards and social media posts (Facebook and Instagram). The illustrations work well across many different platforms and layouts, crafted together by my collaborator, Carmen Cheung.
